"Ah Hock's Park Adventure: Unmasking the Online Scam with Mr. Kwok"

Hello, kakis! It's your friendly neighborhood Ah Hock here, back with another tale that's as Stirring as a sip of Teh Tarik. This time, it's about my friend, Mr. Kwok, and his unfortunate encounter with an online scam.

AH hock weekend stroll

It was a typical Sunday morning, and I was taking my usual stroll at the neighborhood park, enjoying the sights and scents of nature. Suddenly, I noticed a rustling in the bushes. My first thought was, "Wah, Sunday morning also got people so daring ar?" But as I was about to leave, thinking it might be some lovebirds, I heard a "psst, psst" and turned around. To my surprise, it was Mr. Kwok, Looking as stressed as a taxi uncle in peak hour traffic, hiding in the bushes!

"Eh, Mr. Kwok, you here with who? Your wife knows what you doing ar?" I asked, trying to suppress my laughter. But Mr. Kwok looked serious. He explained that he was hiding because he had lost their money to an online moneylending scam. He had wanted to surprise his wife with a cruise to nowhere for their anniversary but needed more cash. Now, he was really going nowhere, scared to face his fiery, frying pan-swinging wife, Mrs. Kwok.

I told him, "Aiya, Mr. Kwok, hiding no use la. Better face the music before Mrs. Kwok makes a police report. Worse, right?" So, I brought him home and explained to Mrs. Kwok about the whole situation. To my surprise, Mrs. Kwok was understanding. She told Mr. Kwok, "It's ok la, at least we learn. Never mind the cruise, let's make the future better instead of crying over spilled milk." I was relieved. Crisis averted!

I told them in the future before making any decisions they should check the following sites for advice and whatnot, the advisory for borrowers on licensed moneylending by the Ministry of Law, and the list of licensed moneylenders in Singapore. I also shared the anti-scam helpline at 1800-722-6688.

But the story doesn't end there, lah. I also shared with them some real stories from the Scam Alert website, showing them how easy it is to fall for these scams if you're not careful. Did you know that since 2022, 1031 victims have fallen to scams, with losses amounting to $9.3 million SGD! Scary, right?

So, my kakis, remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Always be careful when dealing with online loans, and only trust licensed moneylenders like HMS Credit.

Until next time, this is Ah Hock, signing off. Take care, lah!
